Texas Tech regents decided on a name for the soon to be constructed indoor football training facility. It is part of a new sports performance center for the university. Gary Peterson a Tech alumnus pledged $7 million to Tech's campaign for fearless champions fund for construction of the sports center. The football side of the training facility will be dubbed the Gary Peterson family indoor football facility. The track side of the facility still has naming rights available.
"So these kind of gifts that come in and name per our board of regents rules you have to donate at least 50 percent of the amount of the construction cost by itself isolated as a cost, and they were able to do that for those specific spaces and that greatly enhances our ability to put those dollars back into the project so were actually paying for the project itself through donations," Michael Molina vice chancellor for Facilities Planning and Construction said.
Regents holding a work-shop retreat to discuss the system wide goals for the year 2020. The first issue interim president John Opperman addressed, is Tech's all around quality.
"It's what our student body is going to look like when we get to 40,000, what's going to be the academic quality of the institution and it's also about having the faculty here to teach the students and provide the good student experience that we expect," John Opperman vice chancellor for Academic Affairs said.
Opperman said Tech is growing at a rate of two to four percent each year.
