Levelland prays for oil field workers

A group of people circled, holding hands, outside Stueart's Pit-Stop Saturday to pray for their community.

Micheal Stueart, the owner, said he saw a need to pray for the area and those who are struggling to get through this situation.

"Well a couple of years ago the community came together and prayed for rain for our farmers and the good Lord opened up the heavens and he dropped the rain and we are big believers in the power of prayer and we decided we need to do something for our oil field folks, they're suffering," said Stueart. "So we decided we just need to come together as a community and pray for them because that's the best thing that we can do for them."

With the downturn in the industry, many people throughout Levelland are feeling the effects.

"We all depend on the dollars to flow and without sufficient jobs and sufficient dollars flowing into our community, of course it's hurting everybody," said Stuart. "We have a fewer number of people getting oil changes so in turn, we aren't shopping as much, my wife has to go with a little less this, my kids have to do without one less of that. I mean we certainly aren't starving but we are watching what we spend and we have to watch our budget a lot more."

Mayor Barbra Pinner said because of the layoffs and pay-cuts, more and more people are looking to their faith in God and she would like to remind people that there are plenty others that are willing to help if you are going through a hard time.

"I think that there are enough people that have the faith that it's going to turn around and they are able to, there is enough help between churches and organizations that if there is a real crisis in the home, there are places they can turn," said Pinner.

Even with the economic downturn, Stueart said people need to keep their heads up.

"Absolutely, don't give up hope," he said. "The good Lord will take care of us, we will persevere this, we know that there are better and brighter days ahead, and we know that God wants to help us, we know that he hears our prayers."
