DPS adding new initiatives for those with communication impediments

Posted:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Getting pulled over by police is always an uneasy experience, especially for those with speech impediments. The Department of Public Safety is working to make those traffic stops a little less stressful for those with communication impairments, by announcing new initiatives at the state's capitol.

Efforts include expanding training for troopers who encounter drivers with autism and how best to approach them. Sergeant Bryan Witt with the DPS says how this move is going to help everyone involved.

"The training both for these people and for officers is going to be a great experience, he said. "We'll know how to deal with people with these problems, impediments and they'll know how to interact with us once we make the traffic stop."

The DPS is coordinating these efforts with the help of the Texas Governor's Committee on people with disabilities and Aspergers 101. There will also be an option to include any communication impediment on the driver's license.
