Lubbock City Council considering an agreement with the Department of Justice

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock City Council members are considering an agreement that would settle a lawsuit against the city by the Department of Justice. It centers on the hiring process for entry-level Lubbock police officers.

The feds claim that the LPD used written and physical fitness tests in the past that had an adverse impact on Hispanic and women applicants, for the probationary officer positions. In their response, city attorney's argued employment actions were "based upon legitimate nondiscriminatory reasons."

Council members are scheduled to consider a resolution Thursday, approving the terms of a consent decree.
