PLAINVIEW, Texas -
The Wayland Baptist University Board of Trustees voted unanimously to opt out of campus carry.
The board following the recommendation of Dr. Paul Armes to opt out of Senate Bill 11, which was passed by the state legislature and allows concealed handguns in campus building with a license.
Private universities had the right to continue with current policies.
For the last six weeks, administration polled, surveyed, and conducted discussion sessions with faculty, staff and students at its five campuses in Texas.
"There are some groups that would have preferred to allow everyone to carry. There were some groups that would have preferred no one, even law enforcement, to carry and everyone else in between," said executive vice-president Bobby Hall. "But in the main we feel like the decision we made was representative of the opinions of the great majority of the university's community we heard from."
Hall says there is chance the university will revisit the policy in the future.
