LUBBOCK -

A judge has sentenced a woman who pleaded guilty to a hit-and-run that killed a jogger to 10 years probation.

In March Maria Isabel Martinez, 29, pleaded to the charge of failure to stop and render aid. Matthew Valadez, 38, was jogging near 20th and Iola when Martinez' SUV hit him. Valadez died at the scene.

In addition to the probation, Judge William Eichman sentenced Martinez to 180 days in the county detention center and 240 hours of community service.

Valadez' sister Veronica Leva said July 15, 2014 will be a day her family dreads for the rest of their lives.

"The officer told me that I couldn't go identify him because it was being investigated as a homicide," Leva said.

"We have a shell of a mother because of [Martinez]. The day I buried my brother I essentially buried her too. Your family still gets to see you and hear your voice we don't get that. Even if you go to jail."
