Lt. Governor Dan Patrick is taking aim at the rising cost of college tuition and calling on state universities to make cuts in administrative costs.
Patrick and Senate Higher Education Committee Chair Kel Seliger suggested universities should be required to meet performance standards before they could raise tuition.
Texas Tech's Director of Communications said the idea has merit.
In a statement, Chris Cook wrote "this proposed model matches the strategic initiatives of Texas Tech University and would fit in the long-term goals of the institution and the state."
Cook said administrative costs make up a smaller portion of Tech's operating budget than they did in 2008, and are among the lowest in the state.
