Abernathy family honors daughter after unexpected loss

An Abernathy family is coping with their loss finding solace that their little girl lives on in others.

"She loved watching football with my mom, I could hear them screaming," Andrea Banda said.

A tomboy in love with sports, her family, and most of all her dog, Lone Wolf. Though a series of headaches and nosebleeds kept her on the sidelines. Destiny Kent was diagnosed with chiari malformation, a congenital defect in the back of the head where the brain and spinal cord connect.

"We were supposed to get the surgery and she was supposed to be fine," Banda, Destiny's mother, recalled. "I told her I loved her, I kissed her on her forehead and gave her a hug."

After complications during the operation the 12 year old didn't wake up.

"I promised her everything was going to be OK. It wasn't," Banda said.

Destiny's family decided this wasn't the end for their little girl. So they followed Destiny's giving example that she lived by everyday.

"If somebody needed something she was there and she would give her last dollar to one of her siblings if they needed it," Banda said of her daughter.

the family donating destiny's heart, kidneys, liver and lungs to three people in need across the country.

"Her helping people made this, I can't say easier, but I know it's something she would, she was just such a giving person," Banda said.

Destiny would have finished seventh grade this may. she is survived by three brothers and two sisters, including her twin.

The family is close to reaching their goal of $12,000 through a Go Fund Me page.
