Post Office's 'Stamp Out Hunger' this weekend

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock residents can leave non-perishable food in a bag near their mailboxes Saturday for the Post Office's "Stamp Out Hunger" initiative.

A letter carrier will collect those donations and deliver them to the South Plains Food Bank.

The annual drive, hosted by the National Association of Letter Carriers, is aimed to support local food banks around the country and the 48 million Americans who struggle with hunger.

"We usually pick up between 38,000 to 42,000 pounds a year and I think a lot of people just don't understand the depth of hunger," said Postal Service carrier, Wayne Jumper. "Just in the LISD area, about 72 percent of the children are on some sort of lunch voucher program."

The "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive is held in 10,000 cities in all 50 states.
