Council updates fuel and gas codes, including ban on CSST

Posted:

City Council gave the final approval for updates to building, plumbing and fuel and gas codes.

One item up for review was a local moratorium on yellow jacketed corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) for natural gas in new home and business construction. It has been in place since 2012. Newer versions of CSST have extra shielding to make it more resistant to electrical arcing and lightning.

The ordinance sets specific standards for gas line tubing.

This ordinance has been in the works for years, after Brennen Teel died in a south Lubbock home fire and explosion in 2012. Fire investigators linked that incident to a lightning strike.
