"I feel like a new person," Audrey Key said. The 49-year-old mother wasn't feeling this good 10 months ago.
"I ended up having fibromyalgia and Crohn's, interstitial cystitis. I've had tendonitis in like every tendon you can have them in. Plantar fasciitis, I've had all these inflammatory health issues," Key said. She tried treating the symptoms with pills.
"I feel like a rat on a wheel taking all this medication, and it's not doing anything. It's not making anything better," Key said. On top of that, Key was trying everything to shed fat.
"I tried Weight Watchers, I tried Inches Away I tried Herbalife. Nothing has really worked until I cut the carbs out," Key said. Slashing carbs was her recipe for success.
"Cutting sugar out has been a big thing for me, cutting wheat, cutting corn and rice," Key said. Her low-carb lifestyle was parked by a doctor's recommendation.
"I had a hysterectomy and because of hormonal issues my shoulder froze up. My chiropractor told me if I would try a low-carb diet, like Wheat Belly, that it would thaw out really quickly. He said it would probably improve the Crohn's disease and all the health issues that are inflammatory," Key said. Key stopped eating things like oatmeal and whole wheat bread.
"Things I thought I was doing good for my body were really not," Key said. "The wheat and the sugar and all that make inflammation in the body."
She's been low-carb for about 10 months.
"I've lost 30 pounds. Then of course getting off all my medications has been my biggest goal," Key said. She went from nine medications to one, and she says cutting carbs is easier than most people think.
"You have to recruit your family in order to be successful," Key said. However, don't expect everyone to be encouraging.
"I think a big problem is that others around you might not be supportive or they mock what you're doing," Key said. Regardless, she said she's committed to low-carb for the long-haul.
"For me, my health is going to be worse if I look back and go back to my old ways. So, I'm not going back," Key said.
Key participates in a program called "Cut the Killer Carbs" Metabolic Coaching in Lubbock.
