LUBBOCK, Texas -
The Lubbock County Election Office released its unofficial final results of the Lubbock ISD District 1 race late Friday night, and last Saturday's election ended in a tie for Lala Chavez and Mario Ybarra -- 747 to 747.
Election administrator Dorothy Kennedy told FOX34 the tie triggers an automatic recount of the votes, including military and provisional ballots. If there is still a tie after the recount, there is a second election -- that is, unless both candidates agree to a coin flip.
Chavez originally led the race with the early votes tallied, but Ybarra surged back on Election Day to take a 2 vote lead -- 747 to 745. The additional ballots tallied since Saturday added two votes to Chavez's total.
