Neither candidate willing to concede LISD District 1 race

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Neither candidate in the race for LISD Board of Trustees District 1 say they are willing to concede after a recount confirms a tie between incumbent Mario Ybarra and challenger, Oralia "Lala" Chavez.

Each candidate has exactly 747 votes.

Their options now -- cast lots -- or hold another election. Both say they're leaning toward the second option, based on community feedback.

"Simply because I don't think that our students, our kids," Chavez said. "Their education means so much more to their future than a coin toss."

Ybarra said "I wouldn't want to let all of this ride on chance, a flip of a coin, a draw of a straw or a cut of the cards. I think it's too important to do that. I feel like the voters need to decide."

A final decision will be made by 5 p.m. Thursday. If a second election is chosen, the tentative date is June 7.
