Recent cooler weather could delay cotton planting

Posted:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Many cotton producers will take this kind of recent rain any day of the week, it's the cold weather that's causing an issue.

Cotton crops require a warm soil temperature for the seed to properly germinate. With the recent unusual low temps for this time of year, Mary Jane Buerkle with Plains Cotton Growers says it could be difficult for the crop to sustain.

"Last year, we were in this situation as well," she said. "It was a very, very wet May and we had some producers who were not able to get their crop planted until the first week of June and they were right up against that final plant date but typically by now we'll see a lot of planters in the field, but of course they're delayed by this rainfall."

Lubbock County's final plant date is June 5. There is a late planting period producers can take advantage of, however Buerkle says there are penalties associated with it.
