INTERVIEW: Supporters hold vigil for veterans to prevent suicide

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Sunday night (May 22) at 10:22 p.m. (22:22), several veteran support organizations in the South Plains held a memorial and vigil for active, retired, and discharged servicemembers at the Lubbock Area Veterans War Memorial. Veteran support group "Remember Our Heroes" has headed the effort, uniting other groups to put on the event.

Vietnam veteran and former U.S. Attorney Dick Baker is a volunteer with the group, and was a guest on the News Sunday night ahead of the event. He said the time and date are reflective of the statistic indicating an average of 22 veterans and servicemembers commit suicide each day. He said the vigil is both to remember the veterans who've died and to provide support for those who feel they're struggling with civilian life after the service.
