LPD: Body cams used in effort to maintain transparency with public

Posted:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

The state legislature is discussing regulating the use of police body camera footage for public use and when they will be turned on.

Lt. Ray Mendoza says the Lubbock Police Department will use the cameras to record all interactions between officers and the public, but not all footage will be available to the public.

"We want to be as transparent as possible," he said. "So if it's something that we can release without violating any kind of laws or regulations concerning the body cameras, then we're going to release it. It's an effort to be transparent."

He said the footage will only be kept for 180 days unless it's needed for evidence.
