Rep. King weighs in on school finance after Texas high court ruling

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Plainview-area Rep. Ken King weighed in on the school finance debate after the Texas Supreme Court ruled the way public schools are funded is constitutional.

More than 600 school districts had sued, claiming funding was inadequate and unfairly distributed after the Legislature cut $5.4 billion in school funding in 2011.

Some of that funding was restored in the last session.

King says the issue will likely come up in the next session, but it's too early to tell whether the state's budget will be cut or expanded.

"I think there's some small changes that can be made and should be that we'll definitely be working on in this office," King said, "but as far as a comprehensive school finance plan, I haven't seen anything in the works yet."

The next Legislative session begins in January.
