LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock is sending one of its own to assist in one of the worst disasters in Canadian history.

The American Red Cross South Plains is sending Senior Disaster Program Manager John Cummins to Alberta, Canada.

More than 80,000 residents were displaced after devastating wildfires.

Cummins will be a part of a 15-member response team to help residents integrate back to normalcy.

"This will be the first time they've seen their homes since the wildfires hit, some folks are going to come back and simply have a lot of cleanup that has to be done, others are going to come back to find that their homes are just not there anymore," Cummins said. "So what we're going to be doing is going to vary on what their needs are."

The response team expected to be in Canada for at least three weeks.
