Local educators attend first-ever South Plains Google Summit

LUBBOCK -

More than 500 educators from across the area attended the first-ever South Plains Google Summit.

Teachers and administrators were taught how to use Google Apps, educational tools and best practices to help with student learning.

"The kids just adapt a lot quicker and learn the tools a lot faster," said Monica Isabel Martinez, regional director for EdTech, a Google For Education partner. "Events like this really help educators become more aware of what's available and what's out there and -- not just be aware -- but actually have hands-on experience with these different resources and tools so that they can better prepare themselves to then utilize these resources when they are working with their students."

LISD's Digital Learning Coordinator Sherry Mitchell says having the summit in Lubbock is a very cost-effective way for educators from nearby districts to get the same training as larger districts.

"Now, students have devices in just about every classroom," Mitchell said. "We're a bring-your-own-device district, so students can actually bring their own devices and use those in the classroom, but also some classrooms provide those for them. So it makes classrooms very interactive instead of standing up in front teaching it's interactive."

The two-day event was the only Google Summit to sell out in Texas.
