LUBBOCK, Texas -
The American Wind Power Center in Lubbock is expanding into the largest wind energy exhibit in the world.
A new 33,000 square foot wing opening today after more than a year of work.
It features historic wind turbines dating back to the 1920s and a model train with landscaping representing the early Panhandle days of Texas.
"People don't understand how much the windmills and the trains had to do with each other," said American Wind Power Center Director of Marketing, Tanya Meadows. "Steam engines couldn't go very far without having to stop for water, so they bought a lot of windmills to put at the train stations in order to get the water."
The exhibit also includes a large collection of miniature and doll houses.
