LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock's historic Cactus Theater has a new owner.

Constructed as a movie theater in 1937 at 19th and Buddy Holly Avenue, it was purchased by music producer, Don Caldwell, in 1993 and renovated to become a performance space for music and theater.

That was also the impetus for developing the Depot District.

Caldwell has sold the venue to Lubbock businessman Daryll Holland, who also purchased Plainview's Granada Theater a few years ago and has been refurbishing it.

"I look at this deal with Darryl buying the Cactus Theater as him taking on a chunk of promoting West Texas music," Caldwell said. "This venue has been dedicated to that from the beginning."

Holland added: "We're going to be doing some enhancements with the concession area, modifying the ticket booth area a little bit, creating a more roomy atmosphere in the lobby, aesthetics on the outside, few things around the stage, eventually doing some seat replacement. So just a little enhancement and improvement along the way."

As for Caldwell, he says he is not moving or retiring and will continue operations with his recording studio.
