LUBBOCK, Texas -
Texas Tech's Climate Science Center hosted a workshop Thursday, focusing on climate variability and change in distribution of mosquitoes, which can transmit a variety of viruses.
Andy Monaghan, with the National Center for Atmospheric Research, gave the presentation.
"In the US, we have very good surveillance overall for these particular diseases, and a very rapid public health response," he said. "So, in the past when we've had outbreaks of Dengue and chikungunya in the United States, they've been fairly small outbreaks that were rapidly contained."
Monaghan says when it comes to mosquitoes that could carry the Zika, the best advice is to empty out potential habitats and use mosquito repellent.
