DPS urges safe driving over spring break

Posted: Updated:

With Spring Break approaching, Sergeant Bryan Witt said to be careful when going out and plan accordingly.

"The biggest challenge is to remind motorist that they need to take their time and get to where they are going safely," Witt said. "Everybody gets in a rush these days, we just want to remind everyone to slow down and take their time and make it there safely."

He also said to eliminate the distractions while driving such as texting, in order to protect yourself and everyone else on the road.

"If you are doing anything other than looking down the roadway with your hands on the steering wheel, you're distracted and you are not only endangering your family's life but every other motorist that is out there on the highway."

Drunk driving reports spike around spring break every year. Witt said it is not worth risking driving if you have had anything to drink.

"If you have had anything to drink, you do not need to get behind the wheel," he said. "You know, buzzed driving is drunk driving, if you are feeling a buzz then you are a drunk driver."

He also said that if you are underage and planning to drink, do not do it.

"I can tell you that all troopers that are available will be out and also local law enforcement throughout the state will also be out looking for those key things; speeders, drunk drivers and seat belt usage," said Witt.

He said that he wants everyone to have a good time over spring break but to be responsible. If everyone follows their guidelines, Texas can have the safest break to date.
