Lubbock County Unified Truancy Committee held its first meeting Wednesday.
The committee is required to develop a uniform plan for processing truancy referrals to the courts and developing preventative attendance measures within school districts.
The passage of House Bill 2398 requires every county with two or more school districts to develop a truancy committee.
Committee member, Gene Valentini, hopes all of the school districts will have drafted plans by the next meeting, so the committee can make a final county plan.
"The committee's goal is by May 1, Lubbock county will have at least in draft form a uniform truancy plan for the courts, for the prosecutor and for the school districts so that it can be shared with the parents and others so that they know what's going to happen in Lubbock county if somebody is not attending school."
The committee's next meeting will be April 25.
