Storms possible late today, more likely early Friday

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK -

THIS MORNING: It's mostly clear with the temperature in the 40s and 50s across the South Plains. The air is slightly more humid than yesterday, dew point in the 40s. A look out west shows an upper-level storm system spinning near Nevada. That'll move this way, bringing the chance for some storms.

TODAY: A warm day, becoming partly cloudy, high near 85, wind S-SE 12-25mph. A few isolated storms are possible east of Lubbock late this afternoon.

Humidity is the limiting factor in storms today. But there will be more humidity by late tonight. Here is the current dew point map, which will update every few minutes. You want to see 50s and 60s for the rich moisture for storms.

TONIGHT: Thunderstorms are more likely as the upper-level storm system gets closer and we have more moisture in place. After Midnight storms will likely develop either over the western or central South Plains. These will spread east, with individual storms moving northeast. By sunrise storms will likely be in the eastern part of our area or out of the area already.

Some storms both today and tonight could become severe. The primary risk is hail of at least 1" diameter. The yellow area below shows the severe risk area, including Lubbock.

TOMORROW: The dry line will mix well east of Lubbock. It'll be dry and breezy to windy here, high near 82.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Saturday looks great, with a few clouds and the high in the 70s. It'll be cooler Sunday with a slight chance for rain, high only in the 60s. The chance for rain is a little bit better Sunday night into Monday. It'll also be much cooler, lower 60s forecast Monday.

NEXT WEEK: It now looks fairly quiet and dry for the middle of next week, getting a little warmer each day. Higher pressure aloft will be over the middle of the country, keeping it quiet. That will be replaced by a strong upper-level storm system. That could mean storms here either late next week or next weekend. It's too far out for specifics, but something we'll be watching.

7-day forecast

Have a great day. Look for updates later today here as needed.
