Texas Tech's dairy barn receives historical landmark marker

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Texas Tech's dairy barn, built in 1927, received a state historical landmark marker.

The barn was built to house cows from Tech's Animal Husbandry Department. By 1930, the dairy produced enough milk, butter and ice cream for the college cafeteria and private customers. It remained in use until 1966.

Tech student government members say getting the marker is all about tradition.

"I think all the tours we go on, and some of our first moments at Tech were probably walking by this dairy barn and learning the story of it, wondering what was inside of it and wondering about the history," said student body vice-president Kaleb Fisher. "We wanted to do anything we could to preserve the history and the heritage of not only the dairy barn but all of Texas Tech."

The Student Government Association funded the project, gifting it to the university.
