Bowie Elementary gets head start on Lemonade Day

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Bowie Elementary third graders got a two-week early start on Lemonade Day Saturday, with booths set up around their campus. Social studies teacher Mary-Ann Lang said her class set up its booth to reinforce the young entrepreneur program and put their learning into action.

Lang said the students have learned how to save, spend, donate, and earn their cash, and they applied it all that day.

"They're pretty much in charge of everything," she explained, "I'm just here to oversee it. They provide the lemonade, they're taking the money, they're giving back change, so like I said, it's a really great real-world lesson."

The donations from Bowie's stands will go to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Lang said, and the class will also be using it to fund a field trip to the Science Spectrum. Lang said the children raised more than $230 in pre-sales Friday.

The official Lemonade Day is May 14th.
