LUBBOCK, Texas -
The Lubbock Legal Aid Society ensured it can keep providing its crucial service with its third annual Duck Derby. The society provides help for low-income people who couldn't normally afford attorneys.
The Derby itself centered around kids floating rubber duckies in a race -- of sorts -- across the lake at the Buddy Holly Recreational Center Saturday, but the wind wasn't on the kids' side originally, forcing them to do a 'duck pull' instead of a float. The wind eventually did pick back up, making it somewhat easier for the race to proceed properly.
Despite the initial difficulty, a society spokeswoman said the fundraiser was still a huge success with its yard art, face painting, and other child-friendly attractions.
"We don't have the funding to help some of these families," Christy McGill said, "so events like this fundraiser are what help us at Legal Aid to support the families that, otherwise, we wouldn't be able to support here in the community."
The Legal Aid Society serves Lubbock County and 14 surrounding communities. FOX34's sister station, 93.7 The Eagle was one of the sponsors that pitched in.
