Relay celebrates cancer survivors and their supporters

Posted: Updated:

The Lubbock County Relay for Life spent twelve hours celebrating, honoring, and supporting those who've fought, are fighting, and will fight cancer. Unlike previous years, it wasn't an overnight event-- instead, it started at 10 a.m. and stretched into the night, intending to give more people the opportunity to join the party.

The Relay is the American Cancer Society's largest fundraiser, and the hundreds of Relays across the nation provide the money for the services ACS gives to those fighting cancer, as well as their supporters like family and friends.

"One of those is called the 'Road to Recovery,'" Relay Hero of Hope Jason Morton said, "where we coordinate volunteers to drive cancer patients to their treatments. Another that's really important to the west Texas area is the Hope Lodge, which is located here in Lubbock. What that is, is a free hotel to cancer patients who live outside the city and have to come into town for treatment, so the American Cancer Society puts them up for free."

While the Relay isn't ACS's only fundraiser, Morton said it's definitely the largest, and has raised tens of thousands of dollars from Lubbock County's Relay alone.
