State climatologist says 2015 winter warmest on record

Posted:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

This winter was among the warmest on record in Texas, according to the state climatologist, John Nielsen-Gammon.

Lubbock had the blizzard in December, which resulted in an above-average snowfall.

In terms of temperatures, Lubbock was above average too, despite El Niño.

"November through April period was in the top 10 of the warmest periods during that time frame," said Jody James with the National Weather Service. "That part was a little surprising with El Niño. It's usually not exceptionally cold in El Niño, but sometimes you're a little cooler than average, and that certainly wasn't the case this winter."

The November through April period was also the seventh wettest on record in Texas, leading to historic flooding in Houston and other parts of the state.
