LISD, Texas Tech launch Estacado Early College High School

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Texas Tech and the Lubbock Independent School District are teaming up to launch the Estacado Early College High School.

Students at the school will be able to earn college credit while still in high school. They can earn up to 60 hours of credit by the time they graduate, a value of up to $40,000.

Daisy Limon, a student at Texas Tech, went through a similar program at her high school in Garland and says it helped her get a lot of core classes out of the way.

"I didn't have to take any kind of just math, history, government, English, which is what a lot of people stress about really," Limon said. "Those cause you stress but they're not going to help you in what career you actually want to do."

Students and parents can hear more information at several upcoming meetings.

"We're hoping to make their dreams come true with the ability to get 60 college credit hours at no cost to them," said LISD Superintendent Berhl Robertson. "And to walk into Texas Tech as a junior with no student debt is just really incredible."

UPCOMING MEETINGS:

May 17: Dunbar College Preparatory Academy, 2010 E. 26th St.
May 18: Mackenzie Middle School, 5402 12th St.
May 23: Hutchinson Middle School, 3102 Canton
May 24: O.L. Slaton Middle School, 1602 32nd St.
