Severe weather possible Saturday and Sunday

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK -

THIS MORNING: Fog has gotten pretty thick around the South Plains. Both the temperature and dew point is in the low to mid 50s, humidity up around 100%. Fog should diminish by around 9 or 10.

TODAY: It'll be much warmer today than the past few days. It was 64 yesterday, 59 Wednesday. Today's high near 81, mostly sunny, wind S/SE 10-15mph.

Lubbock daycast?

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE: There will be an upper-level storm system over the western United States that'll send some small impulses across the region to help with storm development. It'll be fairly humid, with the dew point projected in the 60s both tomorrow and Sunday.

We'll start with some low clouds and fog tomorrow morning, becoming partly cloudy through the afternoon. After 3 p.m. a few storms should develop over the western South Plains, then build east. The chance for storms will continue into the evening. During the afternoon the dry line will be near the state line, which means most or all of our area will be in the humid air, with the potential for storms. Storm coverage may be fairly limited, but where storms develop they'll likely turn severe.

Sunday will be similar, though the severe parameters are a bit higher. There will likely be fog in the morning. By the afternoon storms are expected, with higher coverage than Sunday. The dry line will likely set up farther east Sunday than Saturday...somewhere close to I-27/U.S. 87. This puts Lubbock and the central and eastern parts of the area in the risk for severe storms. It'll be a little more humid and there will be more shear, or twisting of the wind with height. This means the severe risk is a little bit greater Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Some storms are possible well east of Lubbock Monday. Then it'll warm up quite a bit with the dry line probably somewhere east of Lubbock each afternoon.

7-day forecast

Have a great weekend. Rudy will have the next forecast update here later today. Look for updates as needed right here through the weekend.
