HOBBS, New Mexico -

HOBBS, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a Texas motorcyclist was killed and his passenger seriously injured when the motorcyclist laid his motorcyclist on its side to avoid hitting a closed gate at a closed port-of-entry near the New Mexico-Texas line.

New Mexico State Police say the crash occurred late Sunday on westbound U.S. 62 east of Hobbs.

State police say 55-year-old Stephen Ekstrom of Midland, Texas, was killed after taking the port of entry's exit.

His passenger was identified as 54-year-old Pamela Sisi, also of Midland.  She was airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.
