LUBBOCK, Texas -
West Texas pianist and composer Doug Smith died Sunday, according to friends.
Smith was paralyzed following a wreck in 2007 after he reportedly fell asleep driving home from his studio. He spent several hours hanging upside down in his truck while waiting for rescue. In a 2011 interview with FOX34's Jeff Klotzman, Smith said the accident gave him a "thankful heart."
"Spirits never die," he said. "You know, all you gotta do is read the Book and it tells you all about that."
He said if you live long enough, your body breaks down but your spirit never does.
Smith recorded several albums and after extensive rehabilitation, was able to record his song "If I Could Fly."
He was 52.
