RESULTS: Lala Chavez defeats incumbent Mario Ybarra

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Incumbent Mario Ybarra and challenger Lala Chavez originally tied at 747 in the original election. Both elected to hold this second vote. The second election costing an estimated $75,000 where 980 voters went out to the polls. Chavez won with 53 percent of the vote while Ybarra got 47 percent. 

"I'm going to thank God first of all and all the voters that came out to help me vote. Folks that endorsed me," Chavez said. "It's going to be an amazing feeling. Change is good."

Chavez said her next step is to continue to hit the streets to  make sure the community knows who she is.

"You know there's mixed emotions more so because I've put 11 good years into the LISD and it's been a good run and I have no regrets," Ybarra said. "I hope for the best for our students and I know they'll continue to be served well."

 Ybarra said his biggest accomplishment as school board member was the expansion of the mariachi program to the high school level.
