Developers look to replace abandoned Putt Putt

LUBBOCK, Texas -

The abandoned and fire-gutted Putt Putt Golf and Games facility off Marsha Sharp could soon be replaced by a new and larger family entertainment venue.

Local business owners Jim and Kai Evans are asking the Planning and Zoning Commission for approval to build Adventure Park, which would encompass the site and 14 adjoining acres currently zoned for residential development.

"Bumper boats, the go-kart track, and then we will have obstacle courses and zip lines," Kai Evans said.

She first had the idea after hearing everyone say there was nothing to do in Lubbock.

"We've been working on this idea for about four years. This is the original tract of land that we looked at four years ago and about eight month ago, we hired a consultant of feasibility and really looked at it," she said. "The location specifically with consultants to see how it would work for Lubbock and if they thought Lubbock could support it."

While the project would replace the old Putt Putt, some neighbors are concerned about noise.

John Hart said he is not opposed to redevelopment, but there are a few components that may produce too much noise, such as the go-karts and zip lines.

Local business owner Allen Scott said the noise is no reason to be concerned.

"I think it's hogwash," said Scott. "I think people need to be reasonable and understand that there's noise around here. You're gonna have a little noise, but it's not going to be unreasonable."

Evans said she understands the concerns and will continue to work with neighbors.

"Marsha Sharp will always be louder than a go-kart," she said. "So you know, we have a lot of those things going for us, but we are working with them. We are working with the neighbor and we are adding a barrier, a tree line to the north of our project and then we are also working with another, with a trust to the east of us and we're adding a fence."

She said there is a lot of positive buzz surrounding the project.

"People are excited to have something to do in Lubbock and something to do with families and so we are excited to be apart of it."

Construction could start in August with a completion date sometime during the winter of 2017.
