Researchers find possible breakthrough in fight against mosquitoes

Posted: Updated:

All the rain across Texas last few weeks has been perfect for the growth of the mosquito population. Combine this with reports around the world of Zika virus spreading and it can be quite concerning. There may be a significant discovery in the fight against mosquitoes, which are the planet's leading human disease carriers.

Researchers at Texas A&M believe they've discovered a receptor on the legs of mosquitoes. When activated, they keep female mosquitoes from taking a sugar meal and makes them fly away. This could to more effective repellents, according to Dr. David Ragsdale, head of the entomology department at A&M.

This research affects both repelling the bugs as well as how they reproduce. This could have a significant role in preventing the spread of diseases.
