INTERVIEW: LISD Superintendent explains tax ratification proposal

LUBBOCK -

Voters in the Lubbock Independent School District will be going to the polls in August for a tax ratification election.

The proposal would essentially move two pennies from the debt service to maintenance and operations, adding more money to the general fund.

Superintendent Berhl Robertson said the proposal makes good fiscal sense, opening the door for the district to receive more state funds without raising taxes.

"It's a timing issue for us, and we felt like it was prudent for our kids to be able to access revenue from the State of Texas that is available to us," Robertson said. "And so we'll generate over $5.5 million for our kids without increasing the tax rate.

Robertson says the extra funds will be put toward technology in the classroom without putting the district into further debt.
